The Elementary
Principles of
Piano Performance

In order for you to learn how
to play piano
You must develop your "Fine" Motor Skills...
As you pursue your piano studies, the most important thing for
you to do is to cultivate your Sense of Hearing and Timing.
Make an effort to distinguish tones and keys by your ear, and
practice finger exercises daily.
It's easy to play piano when you practice melodic and
rhythmic patterns.

Here's How to Sound
Like a "Seasoned" Pro!
The following exercises are for moving the hand along the keyboard.
You will be applying the same fingering on different groups of
notes.
Many modern pianists possess this skill and use it frequently when
they're "soloing."
Make sure you keep your hand quiet. Do not move the wrist or arm
in the slightest degree (pumping or up and down motions.)
Practice each hand separately before attempting to play both hands
together.
Guide Tone voicings use the three most essential harmonic
voices: the root (in the left hand) and the third and
seventh (in the right hand.)
These notes are the foundation of mainstream Jazz and Pop harmony;
any additional tones are for coloration.
With these three voices alone you can distinguish between,
major, dominant, minor and diminished quality chords. The
two right hand notes are sometimes called "guide tones."
These voicings provide enough harmonic information to provide a
simple but satisfying accompaniment for most tunes, and sound
especially full when played on an electronic instrument.
They are also particularly useful supporting a big band in ensemble
passages in which the piano part indicates chord symbols with
fast-moving rhythmic hits and lots of harmony, so you can reduce
the harmony to simple guide tones.
You won't have to play a lot of notes!

This is how to "comp!"
Four Voice Shell Extensions are an expansion of the voicings
presented above.
These voicings are mainly used for two-handed comping
(accompaniment).
The left hand plays the root and 3rd or root
and 7th shells. The right hand plays two notes: one is either
the 3rd or 7th, while the other is either a 5th
or an harmonic extension.
By adding extensions to dominant chords and then raising or lowering
them, you can create special harmonic tensions called dominant
alterations.
Do you realize just how powerful your playing will become as you
begin to use these techniques to add life to your playing?
Have you become aware of your growing desire to master these
strategies and incorporate them in your playing?
You have? Great! I knew you'd begin to understand the power
as you learn about these keyboard harmony techniques.
